How do I rig up a dual battery system for my boat. My new electronics drain the one that I currently have far ?
I run a dual battery set-up on my 21 footer with a Mercruiser 255hp engine.
The best setup would be to buy a good high CCA (cold cranking amps) battery for starting and make it battery 1, and a Deep Cycle battery and make it battery 2.
Why? Most batteries can not stand being completely drained and recharged. They tend to form sulfation, and will be never be 100% after a complete discharge. However, you need their high cranking amps for starting your motor.
Deep cycle batteries however can withstand being completely drained and recharged without suffering. They dont have that much cranking amps though.

Connect the batteries as shown, and then you can use BATT 1 for starting, and switch it to ALL for running. This way both batteries are charged.
When docked, switch to BATT 2 (Deep Cycle) for all your needs, including bilge pumps, stereo, etc.
This way, you will always have BATT 1 (high CCA) to start your boat.
