how do i change electric switch?
i have a double switch in my living room half of it does not work
Do some trouble shooting first. Make sure the Light Bulb isn't burned out that goes to that particular switch. Also make sure the breaker switch (usually in the basement or lowest level) isn't tripped. Sometimes it could just need reset to supply power back to that switch. You can take the front cover off the Light Switches safely without having to turn off the power to just look inside. Could be a wire is loose and just needs tightened. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO ANY OTHER TROUBLESHOOTING WITHOUT TURNING THE POWER OFF TO THIS SWITCH AT THIS POINT!!! 120 Volts will definitely wake you up. Turn your breaker off and confirm that both of the light switches do not work. I recommend using a volt meter to test to make sure the voltage is 0. Cost about $20-40 at Homedepot. Still cheaper than an electrician. Also Homedepot has a How-to-do-it-yourself book for $20. Great investment for simple jobs around the house. Check it out while at home depot. Look under the electrical section of the book. It will walk you step by step through the process. Buy a single replacement switch (if still needed) and unscrew each wire one by one and attach them in the exact same order one by one on the new switch. Make sure no 2 wires are touching one another from one switch to the other, unless they were wired this way to begin with. Turn your breaker switch back on and go test the switches to confirm they work ok. Once you do it, you'll think it was a very simple job and encourage you to do more around the house.
