What are the pros/cons of using sand in a freshwater aquarium?

I want to switch from small stones to sand at the bottom of my tank. I have a variety of tropical freshwater fish. What would be the pros/cons to this, in the way of cleaning, the general health of the fish, etc. Thanks in advance!
Also, could a gravel siphon be used to clean it? Or is there something specific for sand?

Pros:
Some fish/plants like it better. It looks nice.

Cons:
Harder to clean/gravel vac.
If it gets into your filters propeller it could damage it. It will be noisy and not work properly.

If you change over make sure the sand has settled down for a few days before turning on your filter.
